The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Edo State Branch, has threatened to down tools with effect from Saturday, January 10, 2026, to protest the kidnapping of two medical doctors in the state, on new year’s day.

Chairman of the NMA Edo State Branch, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, informed the general public of the association’s decision in a statement released to newsmen in Benin City on Friday.

Dr. Oseghale stated that the withdrawal of services is a direct consequence of the abduction of their colleagues, and a reflection of the heightened sense of vulnerability among medical practitioners in the state.

The state NMA boss, noted that the proposed strike can only be avoided if the kidnapped doctors are immediately released unhurt, and with strong measures put in place to prevent future incidents.

According to the statement, “This incident raises concerns about healthcare professionals’ safety in Edo State, threatening their lives and undermining healthcare delivery.

“We demand the immediate release of our abducted colleagues as well as enhanced security protocols for Edo State residents and regular engagement between NMA Edo and the Edo State Government on security concerns.”

The NMA leadership insisted on the withdrawal of services statewide if their demands are not met, stressing that a safe working environment is crucial for healthcare providers.

“We’ll continue to withhold services until our demands are met and colleagues are safe.

“We urge a swift resolution and the safe return of our colleagues. Security operatives should take this seriously, as they’ll be held responsible for the consequences of our action”, Dr. Oseghale said.

The NMA’s action may have underscored the growing concerns regarding the safety and security of healthcare professionals within Edo State.

Recall that two medical doctors were snatched by kidnappers in Edo north and Edo central senatorial districts of the state, on January 1, and January 2, 2026, respectively.
